Our work

Respiratory diseases are one of the commonest causes of ill health and mortality both globally and within the UK.

¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Respiratory has around ten investigators researching how respiratory disease develops, identifying who is most at risk, and novel approaches to their management using diverse approaches. The diseases investigated include most of the common respiratory problems, including lung infections, lung cancers, COPD and ILD.

Our research is funded by an extensive portfolio of external grant funding (including multiple Wellcome, MRC and NIHR awards). ItÌýinvolves close collaborations within ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº, across the UK, and internationally, with centres in Africa, North and South America, Asia, Australasia, and Europe.

¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Respiratory investigators work closely with their clinical colleagues. TheyÌýoften holdÌýdual appointments with ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Hospitals (¹û¶³Ó°ÔºH) or the Royal Free Hospitals Trusts and areÌýintegral toÌýthe ¹û¶³Ó°ÔºH Biomedical Research Centre. These links help support translational and clinical research and ensures our research remains patient focussed.

¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Respiratory investigators frequently provide national and international leadership through positions on grant-giving organisations, conference organisation and clinical guideline committees, as well as contributing to technical reports from the World Health Organisation or other international bodies.

Centre for Inflammation and Tissue Repair

Centre for Inflammation and Tissue Repair

Centre for Inflammation and Tissue Repair (CITR) conducts world leading fundamental and translational research in the field of inflammation and tissue repair within the setting of respiratory disease and tissue fibrosis.

Lungs for Living

Lungs for Living Research Centre

We conduct world-leading airway stem cell biology and lung cancer research. Our aim is to delineate the biological processes supporting airway homeostasis and to identify the earliest cellular and molecular events causing lung cancer.

Respiratory Biology

Centre for Respiratory Biology

The group focuses on understanding disease mechanisms and the search for novel therapies.

Nuclear Medicine

Institute of Nuclear Medicine

The Institute of Nuclear Medicine is an internationally renowned clinical & research unit, and the largest single site nuclear medicine department in UK, serving an ever-larger number of patients.

Teaching and training

¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Respiratory hosts a specialist MSc in Respiratory Clinical Science. We are a major centre for clinical and non-clinical PhD students with a high success rate in obtaining external fellowships, and with our students frequently winning national and international prizes for their research. ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Respiratory has regular NIHR-funded Academic Clinical Fellow (ACF) and Clinical Lecturer (CL) Respiratory posts, with many of the holders of these posts going to develop a career in academic medicine.
