Description

Summary

This module will provide a comprehensive overview of the distinct health needs of adolescents, as well as the wider determinants of health of this age group. The curriculum will be based on the RCPCH e-learning programme in Adolescent Health, which covers the following 13 topics: Health and Illness in Adolescence; Healthy Development; Legal Framework; Communication and; Consultation with Young People; Health Promotion and Advocacy; Chronic Conditions and Transition; Concordance/Adherence; Youth Friendly Services; Sexual and Reproductive Health; Self-Harm and Common Mental Problems; Substance Use and Misuse; Overweight and Underweight; and Common Medical Conditions. The aim of the module is to provide you with an overview of the importance of adolescent health and key issues in this field.ÌýÌý

Learning Objectives and Outcomes

After taking this module, you will be able to:

  1. Improve confidence and skills in engaging with young people and parents
  2. Consolidate and extend clinical skills identifying and managing common health problems
  3. Be equipped with skills to assess the most pressing needs of young people and work with others to improve the quality of service provided for young people

This is an optional module for all MSc Paediatrics and Child Health pathways and MSc Child and Adolescent Mental Health.ÌýAny Level 7 students interested in taking this as an optional module, please contact the Module leader

Teaching and Learning Methods

The module will be delivered through in-person lectures, interactive discussions and groups work,Ìýsupplemented by online learning.

Assessment

This module will be assessed by a 3000 word essay (80%) and a group presentation (20%).
