Description

This module is a distinct part of the first year programme and MUST be passed independently of all other work.

Teaching is conducted through a series of lectures and structured seminar groups, each of which have a particular thematic thrust. The groups are run by a tutor with research expertise in the area. Students are given a choice as to their seminar group. The learning from the history and theory course is meant to inculcate historical, theoretical, reflective and critical approaches to architecture that complement and help develop students’ design interests. At the end of the course, students develop an essay on a topic of their choice, drawing on their seminars and through interaction with their tutor. There is an expectation of independent learning and research, and emphasis is placed on the way that each student communicates their ideas and presents their final written piece in relation to the chosen topic. Students are also exposed to a whole range of outside influences through the public lecture series, gallery exhibitions, conferences and other non-degree related activities of the School, which they are welcome to bring into the history and theory work, where relevant.

On successful completion of this module, each student should gain an advanced understanding of, and significant abilities in the following:

1. Identification, investigation and communication of an understanding of a specific area of architectural interest;

2. The development of a critical awareness of the role of history, theory and criticism in architectural discourse;

3. Specific historical contexts and a wider body of theoretical material relevant to their chosen areas of interest;

4. The relationship between history, theory, criticism and architectural design and practice;

5. Research as a creative, critical and inventive activity;

6. Necessary skills in reading, research and academic writing.

Students should also gain an advanced understanding of, and significant abilities in history and criticism in relation to;

1. Architecture and the built environment

2. Landscape

3. Art

4. Cultural studies

5. Wider global issues

6. Urban design

On completion of the module, each student is to produce a 4,500 word ‘Article’ that demonstrates speculative and critical responses to their History and Theory subject. Students individually formulate a topic of their choice based on learning from their seminars. It may focus specifically on architectural issues, or may explore the relationship between architecture and other disciplines. Where appropriate, the article may include visual or audio material.
