Description

Description: Advanced Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience

This module builds on the module ‘Introduction to Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience’ (CHLD0056) and develops a more in-depth understanding of some of the methods and approaches used within developmental cognitive neuroscience with their clinical implications. Different paradigms and techniques are described such as neuroimaging, electrophysiology, and experimental cognitive neuropsychology. The combination of such techniques to further our understanding of developing brain-behaviour interactions is illustrated through reviews of contemporary research and discussions on neurodevelopmental conditions of genetic origin or following brain injury or infection.

The content of this module is delivered in accordance with the British Psychological Society 2019 Clinical Neuropsychology Standards for Accreditation (Paediatric Programmes).

Advanced methodology and paradigms relevant to the clinical study of developmental brain/behaviour relationships including:

  • Quantitative structural and functional neuroimaging
  • Quantitative electrophysiology including event-related paradigms
  • Experimental cognitive techniques

Learning Objectives and Outcomes

  • To teach students about methods of quantitative structural and functional neuroimaging.
  • To teach students about methods of quantitative electrophysiological techniques including event-related paradigms.
  • To teach students about experimental cognitive techniques.
  • To teach students how each of the advanced techniques described could inform current or future clinical neuropsychology practice.

Students will develop an in-depth understanding of the current techniques that are most relevant to advancing contemporary clinical research within paediatric neuropsychology. Leading edge techniques will involve the combination of advances within the fields of neuroimaging, electrophysiology, and experimental cognitive neuropsychology.

Students should be able to critically evaluate the application of such techniques to inform clinical practice.

This is a core module for the MSc/PG Diploma in Applied/Clinical Paediatric Neuropsychology.

Teaching and Learning Methods

Teaching is delivered through live face-to-face, online and pre-recorded lectures, alongside learning through readings and tutorials, discussion, and seminar sessions.

Assessment

You will be assessed by aÌýtimed (90 minute) unseen exam.Ìý The format of questions includes multiple-choice, matching the correct answer from a list of options, deciding whether statements are true/false, and short answer (e.g. completing a statement using one or words or answering a more open-ended question with a short paragraph).
