Module Description

This course consists of ten separate topics relating to archaeological field techniques. It builds on previous work undertaken in ARCL0011:Ìý Field Methods. Topics covered include: geophysics, aerial survey, desk-based assessments, GIS, field survey, research designs, post-excavation analysis and LiDAR.ÌýThis module is aimed to develop students knowledge of field techniques learnt during their first year and vacation fieldwork. The course will be jointly taught by Kris Lockyear and Archaeology South-East.

Module aims

The aim of this course is to provide a more in depth examination of selected topics in archaeological fieldwork building upon the material covered in ARCL0011, Field Methods. The emphasis is largely (although not entirely) on the types of knowledge useful for commercial archaeology, and the assessments are based on real-world tasks.

Learning outcomes

This course is designed to give students:

1. a better understanding of the process of undertaking a field project from design to publication;

2. an introduction to creating a desk-top assessment;

3. further experience in analysing aerial photographs;

4. knowledge of the acquisition and analysis of LiDAR data.

5. Improve upon your group working skills.

6. Improve your skills in seeking out relevant data both in traditional publications and the web, and from other professionals.

7. Expand and improve basic computing skills.

8. Experience of academic research, writing and referencing.
