Description

'Advanced Materials for Real-World Applications and Exploitation鈥 will provide a very detailed overview of various categories of functional materials and emerging advanced devices for real-world applications in high-tech sectors. The course will start with an overview of different classes of functional materials, including semiconductors, nanomaterials, composites, biomaterials, piezoelectric, and thermoelectric materials with a particular focus on their implementation in real-world applications, with main attention to electronic devices, including solar cells, light emitting diodes, transistors, capacitors and sensors. The module will go on illustrating in detail the necessary concepts of these emerging advanced functional materials that will enable students to interpret the principles of materials selection, products design, device fabrication, characterisation techniques, materials translation, market trends and their future prospects. This module will bridge the gap between fundamental material science knowledge and implementation of novel product design and manufacturing in real-world applications. Furthermore, a number of industrial and enterprise case studies based on real-world applications of novel functional materials will be delivered. This module will develop a wide range of different abilities and skills in the students enabling them to be well-prepared for future enterprise adventures, employment in industries, as well as pursing further studies at doctoral level
