Description

This module offers students an opportunity to learn about recent advances in the study of language development and the biggest remaining questions researchers are trying to tackle. The module focuses on unpacking the features of language input to infants and how they learn from it, with a special emphasis on early speech perception and word learning.

This module is taught in 10 weekly lectures and 5 seminars

Module Aims

  • To introduce core themes in investigating the language input to infants
  • To introduce the mechanisms infants use to learn from the input
  • To review theoretical models that explain language development in infancy
  • To introduce current issues and controversies in the study of early language development
  • To introduce the wide range of methods used to study early language development
  • To foster critical reading of the literature
  • To provide practical experience in analyzing language development data using the most common tools and datasets in the field
