Description

This module has been established to ensure that students can write at Masters Level and can analyse texts to a sufficient depth as to establish relevant content for their individual programme of study. The vehicle for this is an introduction to key architectural design theoretical concepts so that these can be taken forward in Terms 2 and 3. The course is taught in Term 1. These concepts are varied but specific to the cluster’s research for that year.

This module provides students with an introduction to the skills required to undertake a theoretical, cultural and historical study at postgraduate level into the issues that underpin the study of architectural design, and to introduce them to appropriate lines of investigation.

On successful completions of this modules student should gain a knowledge of the theoretical and historical issues that underpin the study of architectural design. They should also gain an understanding of the skills required to undertake a theoretical and historical study at postgraduate level, specifically how to undertake a literature search and how to construct an appropriate bibliography.

The module begins with introductory lectures in week 7 of Term 1. These lectures are given by the student’s Lab/Cluster design leader(s) and by the lab/cluster theory tutor. The Lab/Cluster theory tutor presents the lab/cluster reading list. An individual research topic is set for every student and this forms the basis of the literature review. The Lab/Cluster theory tutor gives weekly seminars and tutorials and a 1,000 word draft is submitted in week 14 of Term 1. After feedback, a 2,500 word essay is submitted at the start of Term 2.

This module is taught through lectures and weekly tutorials throughout Term 1. Tutors are allocated to individual student clusters (groups). An essay is submitted at the begining of Term 2.
