Description

Module Aims and/or Objectives: The module aims to deepen your understanding of the different purposes of assessment and the underlying theoretical concepts in the field. It addresses both summative (sometimes called assessment of learning) and formative (sometimes called assessment for learning) uses. Over the weeks, we will explore assessment contexts e.g., what happens in classrooms, workplace assessment; we’ll explore the ‘political’ side of assessment through examination of policymaking, and the use of assessment outcomes.Ìý

Indicative Topics: What is assessment?: definitions, validity & reliability, bias & fairness; Assessment in action: formative and summative uses of assessment, and the relationship between them; Assessment issues: accountability, impact on learners, assessment literacy; Assessment practice: vocational education assessment, AI and the future of assessment.Ìý

Teaching and learning: The taught element of the module runs for 11 consecutive weeks in term 3, with 1 reading week. In total there will be 10 weeks of focused teaching and learning activities. We follow a blended approach to teaching and learning, which means that students will be engaging in a live f2f weekly session together with online pre- and post-session activities (which run throughout the week). Students are expected to engage in 8-10 hours of teaching and learning related activities, per week.Ìý
