Description

Summary

This module concerns the understanding of basic research methods at a Masters level and how they are applied to evaluate key clinical issues relevant to child and adolescent mental health. You learn about research methodology, the properties of variables, and essential statistical methods. The module introduces the concepts of reliability and validity, and how to critically appraise research papers, including issues of generalizability and statistical power. The course is tailored to research methods that are relevant to child and adolescent mental health and the particular considerations that need to be given to research methods in the younger population.

Learning Objectives and Outcomes:

After taking this module, you should be able to:

  1. Understand basic research methods and their limitations at a level appropriate for a Masters level qualification
  2. Understand research evaluation and appraisal techniques
  3. Consider the implications of these for everyday practice including the analysis, critical appraisal and application of findings
