Description

The module provides students of the MSc Biodiversity and Global Change, and MRes Biodiversity, Evolution and Conservation, with foundational knowledge on the generation and maintenance of biodiversity, covering topics from speciation to community ecology, macroecology, global change biology and conservation science. The module will help students understand universal patterns in the distribution and diversity of life, addressing questions such as: What are the evolutionary and ecological processes that generate and maintain the enormous diversity within and across species and ecological communities, and why does biodiversity vary so dramatically across the surface of the Earth and across The Tree of Life? What are the major drivers of biodiversity change in the Anthropocene and how is biodiversity responding to these pressures? How can we monitor these changes, predict future responses, and conserve biodiversity - as well as the processes that have generated and maintain it - on a rapidly changing planet?Ìý
