Description

Business for Bioscience sits at the interface between bioscience and business, covering the parts of management science that are most relevant to bioscience. Bioscience often has a long, complex route from innovation to implementation. The content therefore includes integration with practice, bioscience firms, medical behaviours, as well as the pillars of intellectual property, regulation and investment. How to gain stakeholder support is also included, for example with sessions that ask students to communicate science, e.g., departmental research, to different audiences. The topics covered draw on theoretical foundations from technological innovation, organisational practice, ethics, and new venture creation. Students learn not only how to analyse business strategy, policy frameworks and innovation, but also how to apply that knowledge to understand market positioning and competitive advantage. Students will gain confidence in learning the language of business to be able to communicate to various audiences and pitch scientific ideas to stakeholders.

The overall aim of the module is i) to engage bio-scientists and other interested students so they can interact confidently with the business and institutional environments where scientific innovation occurs. ii) to familiarise students with the innovation pathways from idea to actions. iii) to support ¹û¶³Ó°Ôºâ€™s strategic aim to be a global leader in enterprise through knowledge exchange, entrepreneurship and collaboration with commercial and social enterprise.

The module will enable students to understand, navigate and apply business thinking to medical innovation in general, to ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº's bioscience research base, and the stakeholder ecosystem around bioscience innovation. Healthcare has specific, complex business environments with many public sector, private sector and professional threads running through. Awareness of how to manage this complexity will contribute to impactful innovation and sustainable outcomes.
