Description

Summary

This module explores the role of the advanced cardiorespiratory physiotherapist, integrating skills and techniques, theoretical concepts, clinical reasoning and the evolving body of knowledge from current evidence. Evidence based practice is examined in the light of changing health care policies. It also explores the causes of cardiopulmonary dysfunction and implications of different pathological states to modifications in practice.

Learning Outcomes and Objectives

On completion of the module, you should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate and discuss patient assessment and examination techniques, including a systematic approach to physiotherapy assessment in both the acute and community setting.
  2. Explain the physiological basis for excess bronchial secretions, the properties of sputum and muccociliary clearance.
  3. Demonstrate and describe the role of the physiotherapist in adult cardiorespiratory care,Ìýrehabilitation, including exercise in the critically ill and physiotherapy concepts related to thoracic and cardiac surgery, including transplantation.
  4. Select, justify and apply appropriate physiotherapy techniques including manual, mechanical and exercise prescription. Understand the application and use of non-invasive ventilation in patients with neuromuscular disorders.
  5. Demonstrate an understanding of ventilatory support, positive pressure ventilation, including lung protection strategies and non-invasive ventilation.

Who is this module for?

The module can be chosen as a core component of the cardiorespiratory pathway of the physiotherapy programmes. If you are following the neurophysiotherapy or paediatric pathway, you may choose this module with agreement from teaching staff.

You may also undertake the course as a discrete unit for CPD or, if assessed, you may use the 15 credits towards completion of the MSc or Diploma at ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº.

Teaching and Learning Methods

The module will be delivered via a combination of face-to-face lectures, workshops and seminars. Teaching will be facilitated by relevant experts in their field. Online learning activities will be included to support the face-to-face delivery.
