Description

Summary

This module complements the Heart and Circulation module which deals mainly with cardiovascular physiology in health and disease, with lecturers from within the ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Institute of Cardiovascular Science (ICS) presenting their current cardiovascular disease research interest and its impact on clinical practice.

Teaching comprises academic lectures and tutorials on cutting-edge cardiovascular research and its translation in ICS and partner hospitals.ÌýResearch in ICS spans discovery science, therapeutic and diagnostic innovation, population science and experimental medicine, and data science, health informatics and outcomes. Lecturers on this module include world leaders in their respective fields. The module also offers you the opportunity to develop a range of real-life, research-based skills, and to take a deeper dive into a selected area of cardiovascular research in a formative exercise, by acting as a panel member, reviewing and making a funding decision about a PhD studentship / Clinical Research Fellowship research grant application.

Learning Outcomes and Objectives

You will learn to:

  1. Cover the broad spectrum of heart disease at an MSc level.
  2. Apply these concepts to the pathology of many of the major problems associated with cardiovascular disease.
  3. Understand the basis of treatment/potential future therapeutic approaches for heart disease
  4. Conduct independent research of the literature
  5. Critically assess selected topics in cardiology
  6. Give clear, structured presentations, both written and oral of your literature research findings.

Who is this module for?

This is an optional module for iBSc Cardiovascular Science students, and an optional module for MSc Cardiovascular Science students.
