Description

Summary

Clinical placement modules are each three weeks in length and supervised by a clinical tutor on site. Placements are designed to develop clinical expertise as advanced practitioners under the supervision of specialist physiotherapists and tutors. They also provide a rare and welcome opportunity for you to experience and reflect on practice in different settings without the usual stresses of excessive work load or administrative duties. Placements may be undertaken in a range of hospitals including: Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust, Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Trust, The Royal London Hospital (Cardiorespiratory); National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Hospitals, Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust (Neurophysiotherapy); Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, Alder Hey Children's Hospital, Birmingham Children's Hospital (Paediatrics).

Learning Outcomes and Objectives

After taking these modules, you will gain an understanding in the integration of theoretical concepts, clinical reasoning, justification for intervention and the development of advanced physiotherapy practice in the holistic management of patients. More specifically, you will gain skills in the:

  1. Assessment, examination, differential diagnosis of patients' problems
  2. Application of physiotherapy, treatment/management in conjunction with the multidisciplinary team
  3. Evaluation of individualised innovative patient management based on knowledge of related life sciences
  4. Development of outcome measures
  5. Analysis of the interactions amongst patients, physiotherapists and other health care professionals and the resulting influence on patient management

Who is this module for?

MSc, PGDip and PGCert students in Advanced Physiotherapy are required to undertake one placement as a core module, and MSc students may choose to undertake a second placement as an optional module.

If you are a student with full HCPC registration who completed their undergraduate training in the UK or Ireland, then you are required to pass a designated relevant theoretical module with at least 50% before being permitted to undertake the clinical placement module.

If you are a student without HCPC registration or with temporary HCPC registration, who did not complete their undergraduate training in the UK or Ireland, then you are required to provide evidence of at least 2 years of recent clinical experience (within 6 months of commencing the study programme at ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº), which is relevant to the clinical placement you wish to undertake.

If you do not fulfil these requirements, or if you prefer not to undertake clinical placements, you will be able to select non-clinical modules to complete your ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº post-graduate programme of study.

Teaching and Learning Methods

This module will be delivered through clinical placements supervised by a clinical tutor on site. You are expected to complete at least 105 hours of clinical time and independently treat at least 10-20 patients, depending on the location.

Assessment

The placements will provide an opportunity for your clinical skills to be assessed. Tutors assume that you will have had good basic experience and training in relevant clinical areas and you will be assessed according to your performance at MSc level rather than undergraduate levels. An assessed clinical evaluation and treatment of a patient of approximately 2 hours will form 100% of your grade.
