Description

This module aims to give students a broad introductory knowledge of some common, important neurological pathologies and of the role of Neuroimaging in the diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of these conditions. The module focuses in particular on Neurodegeneration, Demyelination, Peripheral Nerve & Muscular Disease.

At the end of this module, students will be able to…
1. Neurodegeneration (N)
1.01: Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý ÌýDescribe and explain the clinical presentation of Neurodegeneration in terms of the disruption caused to function within the nervous system
1.02: Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý ÌýDemonstrate understanding of the cellular mechanisms and predominantly affected brain regions in: Alzheimer’s Disease (AD); Multisystem Atrophy (MSA); Motor Neuron Disease (MND); Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP); olivo-pontocerebellar atrophy.Ìý
1.03: Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý ÌýShow familiarity with the incidence, age of onset and long term prognosis for each of the above diseases.
1.04: Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý ÌýIdentify the role of imaging in the clinical setup as well as the role of special techniques such as fluid registration and VBM.
2. Demyelination (D)
2.01: Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý ÌýDemonstrate an understanding of the role of imaging in the clinical setup for demyelinating diseases
2.02: Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý ÌýList and describe the role of special techniques such as DTI, perfusion, MT, qMT and spectroscopy for demyelinating diseases.
3. Peripheral Nerves & Muscular Disease (PNMD)
3.01: Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý ÌýDescribe the pathophysiology and clinical presentation of peripheral nerves and muscle disorder.
3.02: Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý ÌýIdentify the role of imaging in the clinical setup, including special techniques such as DTI, MT and qMT
4. Artificial Intelligence in Neuroradiology (AIN)
4.01: Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý ÌýIdentify and outline the uses of Artificial Intelligence in the Neuroradiology of Neurodegeneration, Demyelination and Peripheral Nerves and Muscular Diseases
