Description

Coaching and mentoring are important competencies that leaders need. ÌýThere is a growing body of literature on how coaching and mentoring are a part of the leadership and management function. Ìý ÌýIn this module, you will begin to explore the theories and practices of coaching and mentoring to understand the value add they can have for you as a leader and your organisation. ÌýThe module is designed to help you to critically appraise and use the key approaches of coaching and mentoring effectively as they relate to the leadership function. You will also learn some essential skills for carry out research into applied issues to generate insights and help inform decisions, processes and interventions in the field of coaching and mentoring. ÌýYou will learn how to formulate research questions, decide on appropriate data collection methods, approaches to data analysis and how to interpret results as they relate to evaluating the impact of coaching and mentoring in a healthcare setting. You will review and critically appraise the growing academic research in this area to understand how and why it has evolved particularly over the past decade. ÌýYou will come to appreciate coaching as a discipline and its use both individually and in teams.

The module and themes are developed to examine the role of different cultural contexts as well as organisational contexts to help provide global reach for cross cultural learning.

Some of the topics that will be covered include principles and theories of coaching and mentoring, practices and styles in terms of research on benefits, application in a healthcare setting, ethical considerations and best practices, inter-relationship between coaching and leadership styles, structured approaches and frameworks and the development of an organisational coaching culture.
