Description

This course examines the history of the First World War through the latest historiographical debates and controversies, providing students with a thorough knowledge of both the war and how it has been interpreted. The first half of the term explores five key historiographical controversies – why war broke out; whether soldiers were forced to fight; how much the home front knew of the war’s horrors; why did the Allies win the war; and to what extent the Second World War – and how it was waged - was due to the First. In the second half, we examine new historiographical themes: race; occupied territories; international law; gender; revolution.
