Description

The overall aim of this module is to equip you for a role as health data scientists by providing you with practical hands-on skills for exploring, cleaning, and transforming raw biomedical data into research-ready datasets for statistical analysis.

The module deals with contemporary computational tools and approaches for managing health and biomedical data in the context of research. You will be introduced to relational database management systems such as MySQL and you will utilize SQL for cleaning, transforming, and querying biomedical data. Through a set of hands on practicals, and tutorials, you will apply the gained knowledge onto contemporary electronic health records and health related datasets and gain practical experience on common scientific programming approaches.

By the end of the module, you should be able to:

  1. Apply and explain the fundamental steps of the relational model on complex health-related datasets
  2. Outline the fundamental principles of database-driven scientific programming and computing for health data science with SQL
  3. Design, set up and administrate databases to query health data stored in relational databases
  4. Design and implement data curation algorithms using linked electronic health records
  5. Outline, explain, and apply the area of evidence synthesis in order to detect and evaluate existing scientific knowledge in health data science

This is a compulsory module for all students on the MSc Health Data Science, an optional module for all students on the MRes Artificial Intelligence in Enabled Healthcare. You should complete Principles of Health Data Science CHME0012 module prior to this module.

You will learn through a mixture of lectures and computer practicals.

For this module you will require a windows or mac laptop that you can use to write software code, execute scripts, and connect to databases; tools we often use include MySQL Workbench, MS Excel or other common spreadsheet editor and text editor. Tablets are not suitable for development as they do not offer the necessary underlying infrastructure to install and run software.
