Description

Specialist design tutors give introductory workshops. The student output will depend on the workshops taken, which in each case address core issues such as the role and understanding of materials, design, and the making process. Students take three workshops rated at 5 credits each. Students will be presented with the challenges facing design for manufacture from seemingly simple processes such as cutting, to apparently complex processes such as assembly. Each student prepares an individual design workshop portfolio. The module allows the students to observe the design teaching staff, understand the year's core objectives, and it also allows the staff to similarly observe the students and their capabilities.

Specialist design tutors will provide introductory workshops. A students output will depend on the workshop taken. Students take three workshops in order to prepare an individual design workshop project.

The aims of this module are:
1) To support the learning outcomes asoutlined below
2) To provide the underlying basis of tasks to be undertaken in module BARC0173

Learning Outcomes
Students will gain knowledge in a range of modern and experimental digitally driven fabrication techniques by undertaking simple design and fabrication exercises. They will also gain the ability to present this work in a portfolio/project context.

This module has studio-based teaching led by Research Studio Tutors and involves tutor talks, group and individual tutorials, some individual work and some group project work. This module is supported by and synchronised with BARC0173 - Skills Portfolio, where set projects form the basis of the student’s training and assessment in skills.

Students present their workshop portfolios in a crit towards the end of Term 1 where relationships between design and skill are explored in relation to the overall programme aims.

Final projects must be submitted for examination at the interim portfolio review (mid-year) for formative marking and again at the final portfolio review (at the end of the year) for summative marking.
