Description

The skills portfolio is a record of skills workshops and lectures undertaken by the student at their tutors’ direction and in relation to their design project. Students are directed to learn skills both appropriate to the course in general and to their chosen preferences. Both analytical (simulation and sensing) and synthetic (making) skills are taught, covering the spectrum of virtuality, i.e. the entire range of experiences from physical, tangible interactions to fully immersive digital simulations. Examples of analytical skills include the use of digital tools to Sense and record the movement of people, and to simulate lighting, or acoustic quality in performance settings. Examples of synthetic skills include the use of software to simulate performance and interaction, how to set up and control lighting in public settings, how to create sound in public settings, or how to work with trained and untrained performers. The output and mark weighting of individual workshops will vary according to the nature and complexity of the skill that is being learnt. Skills workshops in Term 1 will be generic to the Master’s programme as a whole. In Term 2 students will take workshops as directed by their design interest and tutor.Ìý
