Description

The aim of this module is to develop high-level knowledge and skills in researching how to design for historic environments. This research may take place over a wide range of scales and forms, for example furniture, buildings, urban interventions or whole neighbourhoods. Students will be required to investigate and critique contemporary architectural solutions, urban conditions and social, economic, cultural and ecological practices in a wide range of cities around the world, and then learn how to use these findings to create innovative and challenging forms of architecture which reuse and enhance the built heritage. Students are expected to capitalise on all methods of investigation and representation available to them (physical models, digital fabrication, photography, drawings, computer models, renderings, animations, films, etc.) and not just concentrate on one or two forms of media. Students also need to allow for intuitive and spontaneous design-based reactions to the issues investigated.

The design-led investigations will include an overview of comparable conditions in other cities around the world, looking at various potential strategies to deal with the complex issues involved.
