Description

This module covers a number of key questions related to research in developmental disorders of communication and cognition. Each lecture will consider how researchers attempt to answer these questions, using a different developmental disorder to illustrate the approach. The module is situated in the causal model approach to understanding developmental disorders, focusing on biological, cognitive and behavioural levels of explanation and how these interact with each other and with the environment to yield a heterogeneous clinical profile.

This module is taught in 10 2- hour weekly lectures

Indicative Topics

  • Disorders covered include:
  • Developmental Language Disorder
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder
  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
  • Down syndrome
  • William syndrome
  • Reading Disorders
  • We will address questions such as ‘how are language and non-verbal cognition related?’, ‘why is language ability so variable in autism?’ and ‘why do children with the same condition have such variable outcomes?’

Module Aims

  • Convey the major theories (historical and current) of developmental disorders of communication and cognition
  • Consider the brain systems which may contribute to atypical development of communication and cognition
  • Discuss the relevant methodologies in this area

By the end of the module the students will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:

  • The alternative types of research methods used to explore atypical development of communication and cognition
  • Theories of specific development disorders of communication and cognition
