Description

This module will give you a detailed introduction on how malnutrition develops into disease from a metabolic perspective. You will study in detail the effect of nutritional status on metabolism and the development of disease, the metabolic response to starvation, injury and sepsis and how disease modifies macronutrient and micronutrient requirements. You will discuss topics on the aetiology of obesity and linked complications in the short-term and long-term, how nutrition is relevant to disorders of the intestine, liver, kidney and immune system. You will also discuss nutritional challenges in the intensive care in vulnerable individuals such as preterm neonates or patients under dialysis.

After taking this module you should be able to provide an advanced analysis of the effect of malnutrition on metabolism and the development of a range of disease aetiologies and to provide an advanced analysis of the effect of malnutrition on disease outcomes.

As well as lectures and tutorials, you will have an opportunity to present case studies on malnutrition (formative assessment), using the approaches covered in the lectures to address specific treatment challenges and approaches.
