Description

The MA Education Dissertation Module supports students to undertake an original independent scholarly investigation in the field of education.Ìý Students often choose a dissertation research topic that is relevant to their personal and professional interests and typically include some fieldwork or empirical data collection.

By carrying out a small independent research project, students will have the opportunity to:

  • Identify a relevant and distinctive topic
  • Engage with theoretical perspectives
  • Ask critical questions about an educational issue
  • Search for, collate, and synthesise a wide range of sources related to an educational issue
  • Identify and use appropriate research methods
  • Develop their positionality in relation to an educational issue and the wider field of education studies
  • Make a scholarly contribution to the field of education studies
  • Develop a critical perspective, and understand alternative perspectives on an educational issue
  • Understand the ethical dilemmas involved in educational research and take appropriate steps to mitigate any issues that arise.
  • Develop a strong foundation for future independent research

Students have a dissertation supervisor to support them through the development, execution and writing up of their dissertation project. Supervisors will provide formative feedback on the following submissions throughout the module:

  • A dissertation proposal
  • An ethics application
  • An initial (5000 words maximum) submission
