Description

This module provides a practical and theoretical understanding of downstream processes focusing on chromatograph to enable the specification and operation of equipment and definition of performance. It provides training in the engineering principles underlying the design and control of processes for the recovery, purification and secondary processing of biological materials.

Upon completion of the course, a student should be able to:

  • Understand the principles of different purification methods including packed bed, monoliths and simulated moving bed.
  • Identify the most suitable purification operation for different bioprocesses
  • Select the appropriate media for, and predict the performance of, a chromatography operation upon scaling
  • Consider how new downstream processing technologies may impact bioprocessing
  • Assess the suitability of affinity separation as a product purification step
  • Familiarise with recent advances in rational ligand design for complex separations
  • Determine suitable strategies for the maintenance of column cleanliness
  • Evaluate changes occurring at industrial scale and familiarise with potential new technologies
