Description

Aims:

The aim of the module is to introduce you to the dynamic systems in nature and how to analyse and model them, and to consider how to apply nature-inspired dynamic principles for engineering innovation and product design.

Synopsis:

This module provides a multi-disciplinary perspective to dynamic character, complexity, self-organisation and emergent behaviour in nature, from ecosystems to the immune system, which underpin desired properties like resilience, adaptability and circularity. The module discusses fundamental principles of dynamic systems, and the system network properties that lead to the rich characteristics found in nature, to innovate engineering process and product design.

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of the module, you will be able to:

  1. Identify the properties and evolution of dynamic systems.
  2. Apply mathematical skills to gain qualitative understanding about the stability/instability of a dynamic system.
  3. Implement the theory and concepts of dynamic systems in process and product design.
