Description

In a society rapidly ageing, the ability to recognise the often-complex issues affecting an elderly population of surgical patients has never been more important. Physiological ageing, frailty and cognitive impairment are fundamental to this module and will be augmented by reviews of multi-morbidity assessment, perioperative interventions and the MDT approach.

Specifically, the module will teach you to:

  • Understand the theories describing the ageing process
  • Appreciate the findings of recent national reports and audits with respect to the older patient
  • Contextualise the political climate with particular reference to the elderly during the perioperative period
  • Apply key gerontological principles and terminology to perioperative clinical practice
