Description

Epidemiology and Infectious Diseases will introduce you to basic epidemiological concepts, with a focus on specific issues relating to infection. The module will enable you to describe, implement and critically appraise basic epidemiological study designs, measures of frequency and association and measures of infectious disease transmission dynamics.

At the end of this module you should be able to:

  1. Describe the most common epidemiology study designs and list their main advantages and disadvantages.
  2. Understand how epidemiology can be used to describe spread of infections within a population and describe the different modes by which infectious diseases can be transmitted.
  3. Calculate and interpret basic measures of frequency and association.
  4. Critically evaluate epidemiological studies of the spread and treatment of infections.
  5. Understand potential alternative explanations for observed associations, including chance, confounding and bias.

This module is compulsory to students on the MSc Infection and Immunity and MSc Applied Infectious Disease Epidemiology.

You will be taught through a variety of lectures, practicals, on-line quizzes and additional practice questions, and group work.
