Description

Summary

This module introduces the basic concepts of epidemiological research design, analysis and interpretation, with a focus on child health. The aims of this module are to introduce you to the basic concepts and methods of epidemiology and data analysis and to provide you with the tools to develop your own research interests.

Learning Objectives and Outcomes

After taking this module, you should be able to:ÌýÌý

  1. Understand basic concepts and methods of epidemiology, including measures of disease frequency, association and impactÌý

  1. Describe the strengths and limitations of different research designsÌý

  1. Recognise specific issues that may arise in research involving children and understand the principles of research ethics and integrityÌý

  1. Have insight into qualitative research, data collection and analysisÌý

  1. Understand approaches to screening and surveillance for child healthÌý

  1. Understand data sources for child health researchÌý

  1. Be confident in interpreting and evaluating epidemiological data on child healthÌý

  1. Critically interpret epidemiological study findings from peer-reviewed publicationsÌý

Who is this module for?

This module is one of the available core modules for the Community Child Health pathway and an optional module for all other MSc Paediatrics and Child Health pathwaysÌý

Teaching and Learning Methods

Teaching is delivered face-to-face over five days, through a mix of lectures and practical sessions

Assessment

Critical analysis and questions on a child health epidemiological paper, with up to 300 words per answer (unseen).
