Description

This module covers three related themes that are fundamental to executive leadership - namely leadership style, navigating power and politics and change/innovation management. The module takes a reflective approach where you not only explore the literature on these topics, but reflect on your own experiences and behaviours. This block is designed to get you to think about how you are going to evolve your leadership for the next level in your career. You will be introduced to key theories and approaches to leadership such as strategic versus entrepreneurial; charismatic versus transformational, distributed versus shared while also discussing and conceptionalising their application in a healthcare setting. You will explore and discuss how you navigate power relationships to get what you want and need as well as what leadership at the board level involves in terms of good governance. Issues of ethics and organisational culture will also be examined. Lastly, we will introduce the role of change management particularly in the context of driving innovation.

This module runs over eight weeks with two weeks for each theme:

  • Leadership style and context
  • Navigating power and politics
  • Change and innovation Management
  • Wrap up

Wrap up weeks are dedicated to engaging with health professionals through online lectures and activities who work in the various themed areas that you have been discussing and evaluating over the previous six weeks. They will take you through real world case studies that solidify the application of these themes to health and healthcare.
