Description

Aims:

The module exposes participants to an overview of the Financial Markets and its key participants and products.

Intended learning outcomes:

On successful completion of the module, a student will be able to:

  1. Understand the function of financial markets and their key participants.
  2. Have an overview of the main exchanges and the different ways that their indices are calculated.
  3. Understand the fixed income market and its major products.
  4. Understand the FX market and its major products.
  5. Understand the equity market and its major products.
  6. Understand the derivative market and its major products.
  7. Understand credit risk, its effect on the pricing of financial assets and credit related financial products.

Indicative content:

The following are indicative of the topics the module will typically cover:

  1. Exter’s inverted pyramid.
  2. Public and private sector institutional participants.
  3. Major exchanges and indices.
  4. Overview of consumer, corporate and investment banking financial services.
  5. Fixed income market and products.
  6. FX market and products.
  7. Equity market and products.
  8. Derivative market and products.
  9. Credit risk and derivatives.

Requisites:

To be eligible to select this module as an optional or elective, a student must: (1) be registered on a programme and year of study for which it is a formally available; and (2) have an understanding of the fundamental macroeconomics and software services.
