Description

This module will introduce you to the field of forensic geoscience. We address the macro and micro aspects of geoscience that can be applied in crime detection. Topics include how we can harness the characteristics of soils and sediments to enable the discrimination of different locations, and how an understanding of terrestrial and aquatic environments can enable us to develop robust forensic reconstructions. The course addresses both empirical research that provides insights to the critical questions facing the forensic geosciences and also provides practical case work perspectives from professional experts within this domain. We will discuss key concepts concerning the philosophical approach and forensic practice, and consider the capacity of the geosciences to yield temporal and spatial intelligence of use in forensic investigations and evidence that can be useful in building a case for presentation in court. This module offers lectures from various experts and professionals with specialisms in particular aspects of forensic geoscience and our visiting lecturers bring casework experience to complement the theoretical underpinnings of the module themes.
