Description

The Genomics and Drug Development Module aims to teach students about the use of genomics knowledge for drug discovery and the current state of pharmacogenetic research, with an emphasis on translating research findings into clinical benefit.

The module consists of a lecture series by both external and within ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº lecturers who are specialists in their field that covers the basic principles of pharmacogenetics. In addition, each student will be allocated a disease or disease area and will be asked to prepare a presentation giving background about the disease, a review of the various medications being used to treat the disease, a review of the current evidence for genetic differences determining response to medication, risk of adverse drug responses and a proposal for future research activities.

Indicative lecture topics (based on 2023/24 syllabus)

  • The Human Genome
  • The Human Phenome and Disease-ome
  • Applications of drug-target data
  • Introduction to Pharmacokinetics
  • Developmental Pharmacology and personalised medicine in children
  • Tumour Heterogeneity and Drug Resistance
  • Using Pharmacogenetic tests to avoid Adverse Drug responses
  • Regulatory aspects of pharmacogenetics tests
  • Modulating the genome-disease relationship with RNA interference therapeutics
