Description

Projects rely on excellence of both governance and control to enable successful delivery. Project governance is associated with corporate governance, which itself is intrinsically linked to corporate responsibility to shareholders and owners, and the wider set of societal stakeholders. This module explores the core topics of risk and uncertainty, as well as specific ‘hot’ topics such as sustainable development that will deliver balanced impact across economic, environmental and social priorities. It does this within the context of achieving local impact that has relevance at the global-level of the UN Sustainable Development Goals and climate change priorities.

Aims:

  • Examine the strategic framework that exists around any project and how it sets the aims and objectives, environmental context and project culture.
  • Explore the interrelatedness of this strategic framework and the management systems that are used to provide control measures.
  • Appreciate that the framework and control measures are part of inherent corporate and project risk management.

Ìý

Issues that the Module may tackle:

Increasing numbers of external parties are now monitoring the performance of organisations, leading to the term ‘governance’ entering the everyday lexicon of business managers and leaders. How this focus will affect projects is therefore an important question that needs to be addressed. This module will deal with project control issues as part of a suite of risk management tools that look to optimise the impact across economic, environmental and social priorities.

Ìý

ÌýLearning Objectives:

  • How corporate and project governance affects project leaders
  • The resultant increase in the need for appropriate reporting to achieve accountability, responsibility, transparency and fairness – the four OECD principles of governance
  • The need for effective sets of portfolio and project controls and proactive management of risk Ìý
