Description

This module explores the politics of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), focusing in particular on the interaction of democratization processes with the building of a market economy, state building and integration into the EU. These will be examined from mid/late-1990s to the present with a stress on recent political developments, but will also with an eye to setting the post-communist democratization of CEE in longer term historical perspective. The module will also familiarize students with comparative and theoretical frameworks for understanding political change in the region including ideas relating to democratisation, "democratic backsliding" European (dis)integration and the development of market economies and societies. Countries principally covered by the module are Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, and Slovenia.
