Description

This module gives students the opportunity to undertake an individual design, process evaluation or research project (including systematic review and meta-analysis). The work involves: identifying reliable sources and critically appraising them to acquire an understanding of the context and requirements (if design project); the development of a research question, design specifications and protocol as appropriate; the collection of data and their analysis, evaluation (including hypothesis testing if applicable) and conclusion; and reporting. Overall, your work contributes to advancing the state of the knowledge, developing new interventions, or evaluating rehabilitative or assistive technologies.

Throughout the project you will be supported by an academic supervisor. You will be assessed on your day to day work (assessed by your supervisor), and on a written report presenting your work (assessed by two independent assessors).

Intended Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module, the successful student will be able to:

  • Critically identify and evaluate work published by others associated with their field
  • Identify gaps in the knowledge, conduct requirements analysis and formulate appropriate (realistic, timely, relevant) project aims
  • Develop a method to achieve the aim with set resources (time, budget, equipment,...).
  • Critically test and evaluate their own work, including interpretation of statistics if applicable
  • Propose future areas of development
  • Present their work in written and in oral form to a critical audience
  • Manage their time and resources, including optimising their interactions with their supervisors

Note: the project aim can be answering a research question, developing a product, educating, raising awareness etc. The method may be a feasibility study plan, an experiment, a literature review, a product development, the creation of didactic material..
