Description

Informality remains a pervasive presence and challenge in the world. The course explores concepts devised to approach its forms and empirical studies presented in the literature and those emerging from the Global Informality project dataset. Discussion of difficulties of categorising informality and its ambivalent nature. The course develops critical thinking and scrutinises models aimed at explaining the imperfection and complexity of human societies.Ìý

The course aims at enabling students to:Ìý
•ÌýÌý ÌýDISCOVER the pervasive nature of informality;Ìý
•ÌýÌý ÌýIDENTIFY informal practices in post-communist societies and globally;
•ÌýÌý ÌýREFLECT on the ways of their identification;
•ÌýÌý ÌýANALYSE political, legal, economic and social roots of informal practices;
•ÌýÌý ÌýCOMPARE impact of informal practices in different regions of the world.

Students are expected to:
•ÌýÌý ÌýEXPLORE the Global Informality Project data set at www.in-formality.com;
•ÌýÌý ÌýLEARN about theoretical approaches and research methods for informality;
•ÌýÌý ÌýIMPROVE skills of searching for and working with academic literature in the library and online;Ìý
•ÌýÌý ÌýDEMONSTRATE ability to critically assess academic texts and to present arguments in a clear and structured form;
•ÌýÌý ÌýDEVELOP an in-depth knowledge on the topic selected for the examination essay;
•ÌýÌý ÌýATTEMPT to create an encyclopaedia entry of publishable quality (on a particular practice) or exercise pattern recognition through a comparative analysis of existing entries.
