Description

Industries are transforming to deal with complexity. Integration is one way to deal with complexity, for example following supply chain management and lean philosophy, which focuses on sustainability and reducing waste. Modularisation is another way to address complexity and it has found applications in products, services and organisational design. For example, construction, a fragmented sector is slowly embracing industrialisation, through Modern Methods of Construction (MMC), offsite fabrication, Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DfMA). Modularisation is an underpinning idea of platforms that shape current digital economy. The module will prepare you with knowledge and equip you with the critical managerial abilities to manage and sustain change in industrial networks, ecosystems and platforms looking beyond projects towards managing products, processes and relations instead. Finally, the module will discuss business ethics, which are important in managing change and making decisions. The module will be delivered through a mixture of interactive lectures, Harvard case teaching seminars, workshops and talks by guest speakers.Ìý

At the end of this module you will be able to understand:

  1. The core concepts related to supply chain management philosophy, lean management, sustainability, modularisation, servitisation and platforms.
  2. Theories of business model innovation, collaboration and co-creation in the context of digital economy.
  3. How to develop and implement strategies for transforming businesses and innovate.
  4. How to formulate arguments for developing a vision and relevant capabilities for integrated or platform-based industries.
  5. Critically assess the ethical implications of business model innovation and industry change.
