Description

Summary

This module examines the neurodevelopmental conditions and their assessment, and possible treatment/support for children with neurodevelopmental conditions. There is a focus on current research and how this underpins clinical care.

Content

  • Overview of Neurodevelopmental disorders including the Autistic Spectrum Disorders, ADHD, OCD, Tourette's and Learning Disability听
  • Overview of aetiology including genetic contributions
  • Overview of best available assessment methods
  • Overview of management and treatment听
  • What next for neurodevelopmental disorders-research and the future?

Learning Objectives and Outcomes:

After taking this module, you will be able to have:

  1. An understanding of 'mental health' and 'wellbeing' from different cultural and ethnic perspectives
  2. The ability to critically appraise epidemiological data from international studies
  3. An understanding of how to design and develop interventions and services including advocacy, human rights and community interventions which are culturally relevant and effective
  4. An understanding of how to evaluate the effectiveness of such interventions as they are delivered

Who is this module for?

This is an optional module on the MSc Child and Adolescent Mental Health.

Teaching and Learning Methods

Sessions will include a mixture of lectures, seminars, research paper discussions and small group work.
