Description

Summary

The purpose of this module is twofold: First to provide an introduction to Child and Adolescent Mental Health covering the key areas of aetiology, epidemiology, assessment, neurodevelopmental disorders, and psychological theories. The course will also consider key policies and procedures and how these influence health resources. Risk assessment will be discussed.Ìý Second there is an introduction into post graduate life and academic skills.Ìý

Teaching will be delivered by various disciplines (including child psychiatry, clinical psychology and neuropsychology, lead librarians etc). In addition, teaching will be delivered by clinicians and researchers.Ìý

Learning Objectives and Outcomes:

After taking this module, you will be able to:

  1. Understand key aspects of child development
  2. Understand key aspects of aetiology and epidemiology
  3. Understand assessment and risk assessment methods in child & adolescent mental healthÌý
  4. Introduction to key psychological therapies and neurodevelopmental disordersÌý
  5. Review and consider the demands of postgraduate learningÌý
  6. Revise and apply academic writing skills

Who is this module for?

This is a core module for the MSc Child and Adolescent Mental Health.

Teaching and Learning Methods

Where possible all teaching materials including PowerPoint’s and PDFs of key articles will be available on Moodle (the new institutional Virtual Learning Environment). Sessions will include a mixture of lectures, seminars, research paper discussion and small group work.

Assessment

This module will be assessed by a single 2,000 word essay.
