This course aim is to introduce you to the theory and history of citizen science and scientific crowdsourcing. Citizen science is the participation of members of the public in a scientific research project, including the engagement of a very large group of people in the creation of new scientific knowledge by using online tools (crowdsourcing). By taking the module, you will explore the history and theoretical foundations of citizen science projects.

This course can be taken independently, or together with 鈥淒esigning and Managing Citizen Science鈥� (GEOG0179), where the practical aspects of running participatory projects are explored in depth.

The course is not assuming any prior knowledge of technical skills, and will cover examples from physics, life science, geography, and medical research. It is, therefore, suitable for any postgraduate student at 果冻影院.

By taking the course, you should have:

• The knowledge of the field of citizen science and scientific crowdsourcing, including the activities that are included in it and its history.
• Familiarity and knowledge of relevant social science theories that explain the role of citizen science within scientific knowledge production.
• Familiarity with the way participatory science activities are integrated into different fields of research, and the reasons for the adaption.
• Understanding the benefits and limitations of citizen science projects. 听

The module will be delivered through lectures that are matched with independent work - every week there is an element of practical work with hands-on involvement in a citizen science project. You can use the existing distance learning practicals that are delivered on 果冻影院 eXtend and other established platforms (e.g. Zooniverse for citizen science projects).

In addition to the lectures, you will be provided with reading and resources and guidance to carry out self-directed fieldwork (e.g. participating in a citizen science activity).
