Description

This module will serve as an introduction to the digitisation of cultural and heritage materials in the library, archive, museums and galleries sector. This module will also involve close liaison with ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Museums and Collections, ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Library Special Collections, and ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Media Services to provide practical hands-on teaching to understand the technical underpinnings but practical application of digitisation in the cultural and heritage sector.

Subjects to be covered include:

  • Principles of digitisation
  • Handling of objects and documents
  • Digitisation studio set up
  • Metadata and object information
  • OCR (Optical Character Recognition)
  • Use and Usability of digitised content
  • 2D versus 3D digitisation
  • The digitisation lifecycle - from institutional store to digital repository

On successful completion of this module students will be able to:

  • Assess objects for digitisation, and understand handling conditions
  • Undertake 3D digitisation of museum objects
  • Be aware of the various 2D and 3D technologies available for digitisation in the cultural and heritage sector
  • Understand the technical underpinnings of digitisation, including capture methods, file formats, compression methods, etc.
  • Understand metadata and preservation issues related to digitisation
  • Understand applications to OCR (Optical Character Recognition) and HTR (Handwritten Text Recognition)
  • Understand the technological and financial frameworks which have encouraged the uptake of digitisation
  • Have an awareness of the complete digitisation life cycle, from transportation of objectÌýstore, to deposit of digital surrogates in institutional repository (and beyond)
  • Be familiar with key technologies: both hardware and software

Optional module for: Information Studies students.

PLEASE NOTE: Numbers are limited and priority will be given to MA/MSc Digital Humanities and MA Archives and Records Managements students.
