Description

Module ContentÌý

This module will give students a comprehensive foundation in creative radio, audio and podcast. Students will acquire the research, pitching, ethical, legal, preparation, recording, writing, editing and storytelling skills to produce professional level short audio works in various styles. The teaching will combine lectures with fast-turnaround practical exercises, technical workshops and group-based critical analysis and feedback of work produced. Each exercise isolates and focuses on the techniques and content of a specific aspect of telling audio stories and includes discussion of the social contexts in which we work and the ethical choices implicit in different practices. There will be formative assessment throughout as well as end of module summative assessment.Ìý

Learning outcomesÌý

Having completed the course students will be able to:Ìý

  • Handle audio recording and editing equipment to produce broadcast/podcast/other audio-based distribution quality sound (including making clean cuts, fades, sound levels, mixing, EQ-ing and effects).ÌýÌý

  • understand the emotional and narrative qualities of spaces, voices, music and sounds and how to record and edit them to suit the story.Ìý

  • reason critically about audio storytelling, analysing the strengths and weaknesses of production workflows and audio work itself and demonstrate a thorough understanding of the range of ethical questions that arise around documentary production and those of audio storytelling in particular.Ìý

  • manage time and production flows in complex audio projects.Ìý

  • communicate effectively and succinctly in professional media contexts including pitching and selling audio stories/product to potential clients.Ìý

  • find the form best suited for a particular ‘narrative’ be this in media or other contexts.Ìý

Ìý

Indicative Delivery Method

  • The module will be delivered through a series of lectures, technical workshops and exercises, production exercises, project diaries, group crits and tutorials.ÌýÌý

  • It will guide students through a series of practical exercises of increasing levels of complexity, that will provide them with a comprehensive audio storytelling toolkit.ÌýÌý

  • Each exercise will be paired with at least one lecture which will reveal the workings of the storytelling form being explored and at least one practical demonstration of the technical skills (recording and editing) required for completing it.ÌýÌý

  • Students will work individually on exercises but move into small groups for supervised group critiquing sessions. Criticism and feedback will be also taught as a skill and this mechanism will enable students to also learn from analysing each other’s work in progress and giving constructive feedback.ÌýÌý

  • During the second half of Term 2, students will select their 3 best exercises for improvement and completion. During this period students will also get tailored feedback and advice from tutors in one-on-one tutorials.Ìý
