Description

The module addresses the role that landscape architecture can play in synthesis of urban environments, helping tune and fundamentally change the nature of the ‘urban metabolism.’Ìý

It will address broader national and international ecological and resource systems as well as environmental assessment and inhabitation scenarios.

Module delivery is in two stages:

  • site analysis and evaluation of landscapes over time
  • landscape strategies, phasing and future proposals

Historical and current case studies are investigated in detail to reveal key aspects of their urban landscape context, design strategies and implementation. You will undertake critical reflection of this and make propositions in this field that can augment the work undertaken in Advanced Landscape Design studio-based module

The modules runs concurrently with the Advanced Landscape Design 1 and 2 design projects and is comprised of an extensive lecture series, seminars, site visits and cross-studio critiques.

In Term 1, you will attend a lecture series including seminars and site visits. Practical work will be organised with the Module Coordinator to allow active participation for all students and to develop strategies for Submission A: the Subject Report.

In Term 2, the Module Coordinator delivers tutorials, seminars and one to one tutorials. You will utilise the knowledge acquired in the first term and work independently on Submission B: the Design Project Report.

The report will cover all the main topics areas and you should choose a topic of your interest, which relates to your design project and then develop it in greater depth.

Your aims are to:

  • provide a conceptual framework and grounding in the understanding of ecological processes
  • develop and critique the function and performance of landscape interventions
  • analyse the application of ecological concepts in the design and management of urban landscapes
  • gain knowledge of the construction methods in contemporary landscape architecture, their management and maintenance

Ìý

On successful completion of the module, you will demonstrate an advanced understanding of what is required to realise landscape projects Part 1: Site analysis and evaluation of landscapes over time. You will be introduced to the areas of Landscape Ecology and understanding how this plays out in urban environments.
