Description

This module examines culture and identity as key concepts in applied linguistics and intercultural communication and considers the nature of the relationship between language, culture and identity. The module is designed for second/ foreign language teachers and educators working in intercultural settings, those supporting bilingual learners in mainstream education, as well as those wishing to gain specialised knowledge of language and identity. A range of identity dimensions such as gender, sexuality, ethnicity, social class, and culture will be explored during the module. The module is designed to enable students to gain a better understanding of how language, culture and identity are conceptualised in applied linguistics and in intercultural communication, the types of problems and issues that are addressed in language, culture and identity studies, particularly those related to social justice, and how language, culture and identity can inform professional practice. Connections will be made to personal experience and professional practice throughout the module.
