Description

The course has several aims, including to provide forensic science students with a clear understanding of:

· The English legal system, with a specific objective of ensuring a clear understanding of where expert evidence may arise in cases;

· Which courts are involved in the assessment of expert evidence and what the role of judges and juries are in these cases;

· The legal responsibilities of expert witnesses, the limits of their role in legal cases and their legal liabilities are when giving expert evidence;

· What the implications (for individuals and for justice) can be when expert evidence goes wrong;

· Empirical evidence on judges' and juries’ abilities to assess expert evidence;

· Current legal debates on the use of forensic evidence in court.
