Description

Summary

This course has been developed to encourage participants to explore leadership, personal and professional development within the context of careers in the health service.Ìý

We challenge you to find out more about yourself and how you work with others. This is a unique opportunity to examine what it means to work as a health professional, explore and expand your concepts of leadership and followership, and gain insight into your roles in team working. There are also opportunities for reflection on professional behaviour and to develop better communication skills when working with colleagues, patients and families.

Learning Objectives and Outcomes

After taking this module, you will be able to:

  1. Understand how your personality affects performance and interactions with othersÌý

  2. Acknowledge different leadership styles and their impact on team workingÌý

  3. Identify what can be done to support colleagues in stressful situationsÌý

  4. Understand how human factors impact on complex systems and on patient careÌý

  5. Describe and explain the usefulness of service improvement methodology in the NHSÌý

  6. Apply the tools and techniques of service improvement in day-to-day workÌý

  7. Demonstrate increased confidence and skill in communicating with patients, families and colleaguesÌý

  8. Facilitate the process of change, identifying areas of resistance and knowing how to manage themÌý

  9. Compare and develop roles as leader, team manager, mentor and colleagueÌý

Who is this module for?

This is an optional module on all MSc Paediatrics and Child Health pathways.ÌýAny Level 7 students interested in taking this as an optional module, please contact the Module leader.
