Description
This module will examine the challenges and opportunities for education actors in connecting with their local environments and communities. Through varied theoretical and methodological approaches as well as practical case studies, we will critically analyse how universities, schools and other broadly meant education providers interact with wider social impact objectives, such as community development, social innovation, and intersectional inclusion. In particular, we will focus on how educational institutions and educational spaces may develop initiatives that help address urban injustice, gender, racial and class-based inequalities and exclusion, and other societal grand challenges.
The module aims are to:
鈥� Enable a broad understanding of schools, universities, and other education providers as vital anchor institutions in local social听 听 听 听impact.
鈥� Provide a critical trans-disciplinary forum for interactive problem-based learning which introduces students to a range of听 听 听 听 听 听 听 听 听relevant literatures, sources and methods dealing with education and spatial justice issues in the wider local context.
鈥� Share evidence-based knowledge about the scope of design, planning and management in educational institutions to reach听 听 听 听 听 听beyond their own organisational boundaries and engage with local and regional social issues.
鈥� Offer a focus on concrete propositions for adapting education spaces in response to community needs in a variety of contexts.
