Description

The module introduces approaches to measuring, monitoring, assessing, and reporting sustainability commitments and performance in business. You will explore the imperative to measure progress and the value of measurement for both business and society. Additionally, you will examine barriers and limitations to effective measurement, as well as internal and external drivers of reporting.

Insights will be drawn from case studies spanning developed and developing countries, exploring sustainability at micro and macro levels. Reflections will include the complex relationship between sustainability and business, the influence of policy and regulations, the application of circular economy principles, and the challenges faced by companies in addressing environmental, economic, and social issues.

The module will provide insights into tools for measuring, reporting, and communicating sustainable business performance. Practical case studies will illustrate approaches businesses are taking in terms of ESG, the role of different stakeholders in decision-making, transparency, and governance. Participants will develop skills in reporting metrics, creating a balanced scorecard with metrics and indicators for measuring sustainability in business, and utilizing data analytics and visualization methods to assess ESG evaluations in case studies. These skills are crucial for various careers in sustainability and business, and developing a critical appreciation of how businesses can measure and facilitate a sustainable future is essential for those planning to work in this area. The acquired skills will also contribute to formulating policy recommendations for different government levers.

The module covers topics with reference to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals: Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG 8), Responsible Consumption and Production (SDG 12), Climate Action (SDG 13) and Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions (SDG 16).Ìý
